The Quietest Generator – What Does It Mean?

It’s obviously the ones’ with the least decibel range or noise levels, right?

Right, you are but here’s the catch:

While it may seem that it is, it’s actually not that simple. There are things to consider such as the ambiance of where the generator is operated on, and how much generator power it loads. Fuel also is a factor. Propane generator tends to produce less noise, while those that require diesel produce more.

To put it in perspective, imagine a whisper quiet generator running on only 5000 watts; now compare it to a different one that operates on a low-noise level but running on 10000 watts. The former may be quieter but it can only produce half of the second one.

Now for the next part, imagine running a generator on a wide open space. Compare it with the same generator running on a compact space like your room. Your room will most likely have the effect of giving out less noise volume from the generator. That’s because the density of air and other ambient noises are also a factor.

In conclusion, it depends on how much power you need, where you’ll be using it, and how will you be using it.

Sound and the Decibel Scale

Sounds that we hear are caused by sound waves. These sound waves are then measured through a decibel reading. For simplicity purposes, you can check out the decibel scale between the intensity levels of decibels and their relative common sound source below.

                    Decibel Level                   Relative Sound Source
                           10                             Breathing
                           20                            Whispering
                           30                        Quiet Rural Area
                           40                      Bird Calls/Library
                           50                    Home Conversations
                           60               Office/Background Music
                           70                        Vacuum Cleaner

dB Ratings – Strange Decibels

Decibel measurement is somewhat tricky. In fact, reputable brands have even stated of measuring noise level as unreliable, since there is no official or standard way of measuring it, except for science labs.

Here is a good example to portray how decibels are measured:

Doubling the distance between the source and from your standpoint will not halve the noise intensity. Instead, it will be quartered. If you are 2 meters away from a sound source emitting 40 dB of noise, the level of intensity will be reduced to only 10 dB when you are 4 meters farther away.

Here’s the kicker:

Moving further away from the sound source may mean moving in close to a different sound source. A little bit confusing right?

What we’re trying to say is that acknowledge the dB ratings on products with a little skepticism. We may never know how and where they measured it.

Calculating The Decibel Levels of Generators

There are a few options for getting the decibel levels of your generators.

Use Mobile Apps:

It may not be accurate, but it is the easiest and the cheapest. Discrepancies may be within 5 decibels even with good quality apps, which is actually not bad.

Use Windows phones:

It is more accurate than mobile apps, but you will need to acquire software to measure how loud is the generator.

Use Professional Decibel Meters:

The most accurate but also the most expensive way is using a high quality specialized tool to measure decibels.

Remember, background noise is also measured. It would be wise to measure background noise firsthand and subtracting it to your measured dB level of the generator after.
