What Size Generator Do You Need For Your Travel Trailer?
The answer is not quite that simple. Depending on what appliances you have, your RV may only use a 2000 watt generator if you use simple amenities. On the other hand, if you switch on air conditioning, microwave, TV, refrigerator and such, you will need more power than just a 2000 watt one.
Let’s be practical:
Travel trailers require air conditioning, especially on a long trip. Adding to that necessity is your refrigerator. With that alone, your RV may require more than 2000 Watt generator to power just those two appliances.
To expand on this topic, let us say you do power up your AC and Refrigerator. Now it is a well-known fact that motors draw more power significantly when starting. While those two are running and you start your motor up, there’s a high chance the generator will shut down. This is due to the generator’s limit providing all these currents.
Here’s the solution:
You may not like it but you may have to get an extra generator of the same type of the same brand to be paralleled. It is a bit costly but unless you want to power only your lightings and refrigerators, then a single 2000 watt generator will suffice.
Another solution would be getting a generator with more power. A minimum watt output would be along the lines of 3,500 watts. The maximum would probably be around 6,000 watts. Around 10000 watt would be overkill.
